Happy Monday Everyone! I saw an interesting tweet today from Oregon Baseball.
Tomorrow's season opener marks the start of year number 10 since baseball returned to Oregon. Today we recognize the team that got it all started. While they didn't win as many as they hoped, the 2009 team laid the groundwork for what the program has become. #10YearsAtPK #GoDucks pic.twitter.com/iew0msxW7w— Oregon Duck Baseball (@OregonBaseball) February 27, 2018
I remember very well that September Saturday morning, sitting in the interview room, adjacent to the media room, on the first floor of the Casanova Center, watching Oregon's athletic director Pat Kilkenny take the to stage and announce that George Horton would lead the team. Coach Horton laid out his vision for Oregon Baseball and for a moment in time, baseball was centerstage on a home football Saturday. That Saturday, the University of Houston was in Eugene as the season kicked off. Baseball and football were to be the biggest stories coming out of Eugene that sunny day, however, it was soon upstaged by two mascots.
Not only did the fight make the national news outlets, even The Weather Channel aired the video.
Oregon Baseball has had a great ten year run. I know Coach Horton wants to get the team to Omaha. I was glad the Ducks brought baseball back, and yes in part due to the success that Oregon State had. Credit needs to be given to those who worked behind the scenes to make it a success. Joe Giansante, Coach Horton, Pat Kilkenny, and countless others. You made it all happen. Thank you! Go Ducks!
