Happy Thursday Everyone! We've talked a lot about GOES-16, the new Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) that just became the new east coast satellite. The great news this morning is we now know when GOES-W will be replaced with GOES-17. NOAA Sat Ops tweeted this out.
One month until the launch of our newest weather satellite! On March 1, GOES-S will launch from Cape Canaveral in Florida and ultimately become #GOES17 when it reaches orbit. https://t.co/pde4k1WE0S— NWS Portland (@NWSPortland) February 1, 2018
Here is more information about the March 1st launch. It will be a cool early birthday present. hint hint.
Why are we so excited for GOES-S to launch on March 1? It will provide high-resolution imagery across the eastern Pacific & western U.S. to aid our forecasting and identification of weather features! Day 279...
It's Friday! It's Groundhog Day. I decided to stay up late after getting home from work so I could watch the ceremony in Punxsutawney, PA. What I witnessed was like nothing I've ever seen. People crowded around a stage to see an animal pulled out of a stump. There was songs and dancing, people were wearing funny hats, and media celebrities took a back seat to a groundhog.
Finally the time came to see what the forecaster was going to say...Shout out to my meteorological brother #PunxsutawneyPhil! Do your thing big guy! We’re counting on you! pic.twitter.com/FJripgzmRs— Bobby Corser (@BobbyCorser) February 2, 2018
ICYMI: #PunxsutawneyPhil saw his shadow this morning. That means six more weeks of winter. Here's his #prognostication. pic.twitter.com/JAiIRNtXZ2— AMHQ (@AMHQ) February 2, 2018
