Day 18....
For those of us in this part of the country, May 18th has special meaning. 37 years ago, just after 8am, Mt. St. Helens erupted. David Johnston, a USGS Volcanologist proclaimed "Vancouver! Vancouver! This is it!" on the radio before he was killed by the eruption. That morning an earthquake triggered the catastrophic disaster that rocked the Pacific Northwest and spewed ash that covered parts of Canada and the lower 48. It took ash only 15 days to travel around the globe. My parents have jars of ash stored somewhere and my family in Michigan had a light dusting of ash on tables. I wasn't born yet, so I didn't get to experience it, but I was alive for the series of eruptions between 2004 and 2008. I'm truly in awe of the volcanoes in the Pacific Northwest. They are truly the silent danger. We look at them with beauty, praying they don't wake up.
