type='text'>New Music Edition

It's been awhile, so here is the new music I'm blasting around town. Gloriana's debut self titled album is out. It's truly an awesome first CD. The group is young and talented. I really expect big things from them. George Strait's next album "Twang" is due out in a few days. The first single, Living For The Night is already in my top 10 favorite George songs. George goes a little sideways with the all spanish "El Rey" but the whole album is solid as always. Jason Aldean's Big Green Tractor is moving up the charts and will be another huge success for him. I had a chance to chat with Jake Owen last week and he said he was pitched that song, but didn't feel right. He knew it would be a hit. Speaking of Jake Owen, if you have the chance, please go see him. His show blew me away. Eight Second Ride is the current single, and he kicks off his show with it. It sets the pace for a good evening of good country music. I won't tell everything about the show, but his little jaunt into rap and rock aren't bad and will have everyone up singing along.

On a side note, the new Oregon Marching Band CD is out. Go pick it up.

Blog Is Back

Hi Everyone. I had to move the blog around a bit and its been down since early June. I'm happy to say its back up. Thanks to the fine folks at Blogger.com for the help. Hope everyone has enjoyed summer so far !

Behind The Scene's of Vortex 2

From The Weather Channel, featuring a few videos of behind the scenes of VORTEX2.

http://www.weather.com/multimedia/videoplayer.html?from=email&bcpid=823503751&bclid=19052817001&bctid=22598664001

http://www.weather.com/multimedia/videoplayer.html?from=email&bcpid=823503751&bclid=19052817001&bctid=22791469001

http://www.weather.com/multimedia/videoplayer.html?from=email&bcpid=823503751&bclid=19052817001&bctid=24051922001

Cool New Music

Things have remained somewhat crazy over the last few weeks. The studios will remain in the KOIN Center, while all other operations have moved a few blocks away. The promotions office is finally unpacked and we're all starting to get used to the new building. Its quite a change going from being in the heart of downtown, to being on the outskirts of the tall buildings and bustling traffic. I've been focused on the move and SBR. A new installment of Cool New Country Music will be coming shortly.

As for the Blazers in the playoffs, I'm really excited. Tonight was no different. Blazer Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Rebecca Haarlow emceed an event at the Oregon Humane Society in north Portland. The event was dubbed "Yappy Hour" and featured a starting line up of dogs, cats, and two rabbits available for adoption. Each critter was named after a member of the team. Blazers Joel Przybilla and Steve Blake were on hand to assist with the festivities. The packed room was treated to stats of each available animal, including a Labrador mixed named Greg Oden. The idea for the evening was Rebecca Haarlow's. A self-described pet lover, she wanted to help out the Oregon Humane Society and she felt that this was the perfect way to do so. You can hear my interview with her Rebecca Haarlow Interview.

I highly encourage anyone who is looking for a new pet to head out to the humane society and take a look at all the animals they have. You can find out about OHS from their website by clicking Oregon Humane Society There is a signing bonus for people who do make an adoption this month.

Weather Blog and Shout Outs

Wow what a weekend. I lost a family dog who was very close to me. Its not easy to say good bye. I also left the neighborhood where I basically grew up. I moved all of three miles away, but it feels like so much more. Oh yeah, I also had a birthday. Things got a little crazy, but I managed to make it through. I just wanted to let everyone know that 98.7 KUPL has picked up my weather blog and is featuring it in the "Hot N Fresh" section of their website. You can find the blog by clicking here. Its updated multiple times a week and it features not only the forecast, but other interesting weather tidbits.

I would like to send a few shout outs to the people who read this blog and who've asked about it.

Thanks to Joe R, Dave B, Steve P, Jason S, Rich P, Mark N, Jim T, and many many others.

Have a great week !

Cool New Country Music

It's been a few weeks since my last entry into the world of cool new country music.

Let's start with the ever popular Taylor Swift. Her album "Fearless" is tearing up the charts. White Horse and Love Story are a strong combo to launch the record. Songs such as Fifteen and You Belong With Me are just more examples of how Taylor will still be on top months down the road.

Jake Owen is about to roll out "Easy Does It". This CD is amazing. I had the chance to listen to the whole album a few times through. There are several songs that will identify with many people. The first single is one of my favorites on the air right now.

The Lost Trailers busted onto the scene with Holler Back, the upbeat Rap meets Country song. Since then, they've produced some deep cuts. The current song on heavy rotation is How 'Bout You Don't. I really like this song. There ain't no good in saying goodbye is a line from the song. I identify with it really well. I'm about to make two moves in the next few weeks. KUPL is moving buildings, and then I'm moving somewhere else.

KUPL has these wide open weekends where we play almost everything in the library of music. Restless Heart's Bluest Eyes In Texas came on the radio. I hadn't heard the song in a really long time. I just sat in the car and listened. The song took me back to when I started to really like country music. If you haven't heard the song lately, I suggest you go pick it up on iTunes.

Fun In The Neighborhood

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Zfy0l97r6Z0/SZyUiED8fmI/AAAAAAAAAZM/DTsf7cq5AI0/s320/IMG_3230.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5304277774062354018" />

I went out to lunch with a co-worker and close friend today. This album has a very laid back feeling. The first single is rising on the country charts. "Everybody Wants To Go To Heaven" is one of a few fast tempo songs. "10 With A 2" is a great bar song. You spend a night partaking of adult beverages and you go home with a friend. You think she is cute, possibily a 10. You wake up to see that she is a 2. Hmm. "Keys In The Conch Shell" will be a hit, in my honest opinion. The album features three songs with other big artists. Dave Matthews and The Whalers complement Chesney's songs. This 11 track album is well worth it.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Zfy0l97r6Z0/SPLJckWJXVI/AAAAAAAAARg/EODzbBfmjQo/s320/gs.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5256485207724875090" />
Second album is George Strait's "Classic Christmas". This is a great, easy listening Christmas album. Every track is well done and a must have for anyone's holiday collection. Strait's version of "Silent Night" is simply awesome, slow and sweet. The fiddle is incredible.

Football Standings From The Producer

After not updating standings, and taking heat from one of the pick masters, here are the current standings:

Todd 11-2
Bobby 10-3
Mike 9-2
Ryan 8-4
Thor 7-6

Ryan and Mike have both missed a week with picks, that is why not everyone adds up to 13.

Weekend 7 Picks

College Football Picks:

Mike B:
Oregon 35
UCLA 20

Oregon State 49
Washington State 14

Thor W:
Oregon 24 - 17
Watching the Men's 4 X 100 Relay swim this evening was nothing short of amazing. If you missed the closet race so far this Olympics, shame on you. Not only did the American's shut up the French team, that was talking trash, but they managed to swim the fastest 100 Meters in history on the last leg.

The events have been overshadowed a bit by the murder of the Americans, the weather not being good at all, the smog, and the politics. Somethings can overshadow the games for the entire length, but I think what the Americans did in the pool tonight might just change the focus of the games. The Americans are unstoppable in the pool and might be just as dominate on the diamond and the hardwood. GO USA and get the gold. I think we all should be watching the Olympics and cheering on our country !

Also I want to say how awesome it is to have President Bush in China. His support has been mentioned by most of the athletes on the US Team. His presence at the big and small events has been a great site for not just the team, but for the country !

Lost Boy Leads US !

In another great story of pride in the Olympics, it was announced this morning that a "Lost Boy" will carry in the Stars and Stripes during tomorrow's Opening Ceremonies. We were only gone a few hours, but it seemed much longer. My sister likes to take pictures as I do too, but she decided to get a little creative. It was fun to just drive and not worry about work or any of the other issues we think about. I have a road trip on Wednesday to Tillamook for work. We are going to yet another fair. I love the summer for the fair tour. Each little county has its own little appeal and flair for its celebration. We'll finish off the fair tour this year with the state fair ending the month.

Once that's over its on to more concerts and college football season. We are about 25 days away from the start and once again I'll be hosting the college football pick 'em tourney. Each day it just gets better and better. I wanted to look back to an interview SBR did with Aaron Rodgers. We had him on just before the draft. We talked about his decision to leave Cal and how he approached the combine. We asked him if he would like to come right in and be a starter, or if he would like to learn from an NFL Vet. At the time we had no idea that he would end up in Green Bay. I love my job and the stuff we get to do but sometimes we just get burned out and need some time away from the day to day stuff we all do. I drove home and just listened to a CD and tried to clear my mind. I got home and went right to the computer and put on the iTunes and a pair of headphones. I've been listening to just music, away from the noise of the world outside me. I've been at this for the better part of six hours this evening and now into early morning. Its very nice to just listen to music and not have to deal with the stresses of things going on around you. Currently its a classical piece (Mozart's symphony # 40 in G Minor)and I'm sure the next selections will be country. I'd have to say I have enjoyed this time away from everything around me. I think the only other time I might have this time to my self is if I fly somewhere. I don't plan on that any time soon, so I will just have to do this right now. I still have the events of yesterday running through my mind, so I will have to clear those out next. Concert days are long and when you don't really get to see much of it, it can wear you down.

Cool New Country Music

Time for the cool new country music section of this blog. We feature five new songs that I think you need to know.

1. Voices - Chris Young This is starting to get some serious airplay on the satellite side and on local stations. Solid song you can sing along with. This is my record of the year so far (tie with Falling Into You by Whiskey Falls)

2. Do You Believe Me Now - Jimmy Wayne Good song that really looks at a relationship from the other point of view. One of my new favorites.

3. Brothers of The Highway - George Strait Classic road song about truckers. A must have on any road trip. I love the line about the nation runs on 18 wheels. That is very true. Also, since I work for a station in Portland, I've re-written the words to the song. It currently is "North and South to San Diego" and I've taken it to "Portland south the San Diego"

4. All Summer Long - Kid Rock I first heard this on CMT. My family is from Michigan so I identified with it. Its a good summertime song. Not sure what he was smoking back then, but oh well.

5. All I Ever Wanted - Chuck Wicks The latest follow up to his hit "Stealing Cinderella" This is an excellent song and one that really touches home for anyone who has a dream of a relationship or more with that special someone.

Honorable Mention: Different Breed - Carter's Chord These young sassy ladies have great voices and this song make me laugh. We aren't "those girls" Take a listen !

Tony Snow

As many of you know by now, Tony Snow has passed away. Tony was the President's Press Secretary. He was also a FOX News TV and Radio host. I came to know Tony through his radio show. I had the pleasure of meeting Tony twice when I worked at KXL. One morning it was my job to set up his studio for him to do his show live back to New York and onto the masses. I met Tony early that morning and asked if he would like anything. He answered with "a coffee and a muffin." The only coffee place open at 3:30am was the 24 hour Starbucks in Beaverton. Off I went in search of his coffee and muffin. I returned with what he wanted and he was thankful. I came home and went to bed after that. I returned to work later that morning and got ready for our event that featured Tony that evening. I met Tony and the others at the Rose Garden loading dock and walked with them to the dressing rooms along with the other staffers from KXL. My job at the event was the stage manager and as part of that, I had to go get the talent from the dressing rooms and take them to the stage. Tony was very gracious and wanted to know how my day was going and if he thought the crowd would be receptive. We chatted about politics and TV as we walked to the stage. He was a nice guy and took interest in what people had to say and he listened to your answer. We stood behind the screen waiting for his time to go on. He watched the video and up on the stage he went. I don't remember much more about that night, but I do remember him thanking me for the coffee and muffin as we walked back to his dressing room. I had a brief encounter with a true Washington insider and I will always remember that.

TWC Sold

For more head to the Pacific Northwest Weather blog.

Pac NW Weather

Blog Is Back

I'd put the blog on the back burner. The interview will be posted at Sport Business Radio. Take a listen to the interview and let us know what you think. No really...its a moment of free time for me. I'm working off a work hang over. 15 hour days take three days to recover from, not only mentally, but physically too. Standing on your feet for that long will do wonders for you in terms of hurting in all major and minor muscle groups. I have a half day today, so I spent the morning sleeping.

I'm waiting for an email this morning confirming a special guest for Sports Business Radio. A golf legend was pitched to us earlier this week, and now I'm just waiting for the audio to appear in my inbox. Since I don't record the interviews any more, I get an email with a link to download the audio and I go to work. I'll post later when I know if we got our special guest.

New Feature: Cool New Country Music That You Need To Hear

Darius Rucker - Don't Think I Don't Think About It (Darius is the former lead singer of Hootie and The Blowfish)

Kenny Chesney - Better As A Memory, Don't Blink

George Strait - I Saw God Today, Troubadour, Brothers of The Highway, Give Me More Time

Crossin Dixon - I Love My Old Bird Dog (& I Love You Too)

Troops Are Playing B-Ball

Here is a link to a great article from Henry Abbott of True Hoop. Channing Frye, Mike Golub, and Paul Swangard joined us. We wanted to discuss the season past with Channing and Mike as well as what is to be expected next season for the Blazers. Paul broke down the Eugene '08 Campaign and updated us on the fact that the University of Oregon wants Men's Baseball to be self-sufficient. Only football and men's basketball is that way at the moment.

Channing talked to us about his blog which can be found here. The Blazers big man has always been active in the community and says his off season will include plenty of charitable acts. Channing is an intelligent guy and really wants to help out his community. You can hear his interview here.

Blazers C.O.O. Mike Golub joined us in the second hour and chatted with us about the Blazers marketing last season and what to expect next season. With the Blazers in the draft lottery again this year, Mike said it didn't feel like it. I know Brian and I both agreed about that. Its like leaving the party early and knowing you have something else better to do. Mike told us that the Blazers will draft in one of the four following positions. 13th, 3rd, 2nd, or 1st. It is possible that Portland could get the number one pick, but its a .6% chance. Its more likely that the Blazers end up with the 13th pick, but like last year, there is always a chance. The Draft Lottery will take place May 20th. Mike said the organization is planning a statewide "barnstorming" campaign that will take place this summer. They are looking to tie together Blazer fans from all corners of the state. Speaking of fans of the state, there is still an issue with the Comcast Sports Net deal to get the games onto the satellite. Mike says they are still working on the deal and that people have some incentive to get it worked out. You can hear the complete interview with Brian and Mike here.

We all are looking forward to the draft lottery and seeing where the Blazers end up. It will be an interesting off season to say the least.

End Of The Season

The Blazers finish the season at 41 and 41. Given the circumstances before the season started, this is truly an amazing accomplishment. Looking back now, you can see how truly big that 13 game winning streak really was. The players will go through the exit interviews tomorrow and Sports Business Radio will be present to get some thoughts of the players and front office. Just looking ahead, we are just over a month away from the draft lottery. As it stands right now, Portland has less than a 1% chance of getting the first pick. The Miami Heat have a 25% chance of picking up the number one player. Thank you Blazers for a great season and bring the excitement back to Portland.

Nice Night

I just stepped outside around 11pm. Today was just one of those days. Jim Bosley, simply known as "The Boz", passed away yesterday. I found while looking for a story online. I was blown back by the headline. I quickly emailed a former boss who knew him well. She was sad and upset. It was a tough day at KATU and in the Portland media scene. The Boz was a gentle giant who always had a smile and calming voice that let you know it would be ok. I had the pleasure of meeting, the weather god in my eyes, a few times when I interned at KATU. He would just stop by and chat with all of us and wanted to know how life was. He was larger than life. He was truly the ambassador of the station and the northwest. Jim Bosley, a legend and a friend. Rate The Day: 1 ! But I know, somewhere, it's a 10.

Play Ball !

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_Zfy0l97r6Z0/R_BMBNR7LmI/AAAAAAAAAPM/SV2NDSf-yE0/s320/sbr_logo.jpg.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5183726754731863650" />

Like ESPN said this afternoon, they are the two greatest words in all of sports. It needs no explanation. "PLAY BALL!" Major League Baseball starts tomorrow officially and I can't wait. I love baseball. Its a great game with strategy and trickery and any thing can happen. My team as always is the Detroit Tigers. I fully expect them to be in the world series come this fall.

We talked baseball on today's edition of Sports Business Radio. Keith had the chance to watch the baseball game at LA Coliseum last night.

All of us on the Sports Business Radio staff agree on one thing, the best place for fast food...In-N-Out Burger. Everyone loves the long ball. DeMarini hosted a few members of the media and professional athletes at its Hillsboro factory today and let all of us hit in the batting cage. DeMarini put together a little competition that pitted KPTV and KGW against each other. KPTV came out strong, establishing a solid score. KGW rallied late to win by 10 points. I had a chance to catch up with one of DeMarini's pro hitters. Larry Carter and I chatted about what you need to hit a long ball and how the new technology at DeMarini is helping athletes play longer, more successful careers. Tim Roberts, the man in charge of the Oregon Sports Network, joined us on Sports Business Radio this past Sunday. We talked with Tim about the history of OSN and where the network and University is headed. The interview can be heard by clicking here.

Everyone knows that baseball is returning to the University as an official sport. We asked Tim about the broadcasting deal for baseball. He says that every game will be available on the radio and that 10-15 games will be on TV. Fans of football will see some new features around Autzen Stadium this season. On a personal note here, I am an member of the Duck Athletic Fund. As a donor, I am pleased that Oregon and IMG have been able to get this deal worked out and the results from this partnership will be felt for years to come.

Updated: The Weather Channel For Sale

The New York Times is reporting that several media companies are ready to bid for Landmark Communications number one property, The Weather Channel. Landmark has set a deadline for this Friday, March 7th, for bids to be submitted. You can read the story here.

It will be interesting to see who makes the most aggressive bid. The key thing to remember is that while the cable network is valuable, the website weather.com is the most valuable piece of the puzzle. If I had to make a guess, I think General Electric (Parent Company of NBC) will take the prize and join The Weather Channel with Weather Plus. If Weather Plus and The Weather Channel do end up merging, you have the most powerful news operation and weather network under one roof. That's a very powerful combination.

David Stern Comes To Portland !

David Stern made an appearance in Portland on Tuesday. The lucky person will be upgraded to courtside seats and showered with gifts. The Blazers expect the person to arrive somewhere around 6:40pm. It will be very interesting to see who the lucky person ends up being. SBR will be onsite to see if we can snag an interview. This is all about sports business. 10 million fans have come to see professional basketball being played. These ticket buyers pay the players, front office, and other expenses. The fans are the reason why the team still exists. If no one came to games, then there would be no basketball, no team, no fun. Fans are apart of the whole package as the team and arena is. I'll be focusing this week on two major events taking place this weekend, the 50th running of the Daytona 500 and NBA All Star Festivities.

Just a note from tonight Blazer game in Houston...

If I was the head coach (and I'm not) I would suggest that the team shoot the ball. They need to do that so they can score. You score more points than the team you play, you win. The Blazers looked very timid tonight and almost afraid to shoot the ball. Mike and Mike on TV made some very good points about the team not having an issue shooting the ball when the team was in the middle of the winning streak. I think the All Star break will do this team wonders.

It Seems Like Only Yesterday....

On Wednesday the 13th, Portland takes on Dallas down in Texas. It will mark a five month anniversary that Blazers Players, Coaches, Fans, and myself will not forget...

It seems like only yesterday I joined the rest of the Portland media in the Courtside Lounge at The Rose Garden to hear the horrible news that Greg Oden wasn't going to be playing this season. Fast forward five months. Yes five months ago the announcement was made that he had indeed undergone micro-fracture surgery. It was a very weird Thursday morning. A friend of mine called to tell me that Yahoo Sports was reporting that Greg was out. I hadn't heard anything, so I made a few calls, got the word that it was true and made my way to the Rose Garden. It was a sad day. Fast forward to now. WOW. Things have changed. The Blazers are a few games over .500. They are sending two players to the All Star Game and the team is once again selling out the Rose Garden. Maybe things happen for a reason. I don't know what it is, or how it will turn out, but maybe just maybe....Oden '08....Worth The Wait !

Going Behind The Swoosh

CNBC has put together a documentary about NIKE. My brother showed me a cool site. They give you a million dollars (its not real) and you get to buy stocks and options and try and beat the market. If you beat the market, you get a real check with real money. Thats the cool part. You can find this site at UpDown.com

Super Tuesday.....

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_Zfy0l97r6Z0/R6lHNxk_f_I/AAAAAAAAAOc/8uV58TfZ4n8/s320/american-flag.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5163736749729349618" />
Super Tuesday ! Super Tuesday ! Super Tuesday ! Super Tuesday !

Ok its Super Tuesday and its the single most important day between now and the election day. TV News and Cable News is just eating this day up. FOX News has rolled out the new set for election coverage while CNN stays with the giant video wall. Also, props to FOX News for pulling a TV stunning by hiring Carl Rove to be a contributor for political coverage. Very interesting move on FOX News' part. On the political side of things....

Blue Side: Two things stand out to me. 1. Obama has very passionate people behind him and 2. his campaign (Obama's) might be now on life support. Hillary won the key states tonight with giant delegate grabs in the key states. Don't get me wrong, Obama won plenty of states and delegates, but not the ones he needed.

On the Red side of it all, Mike Huckabee stirred the pot and possibly put Mitt Romney into a tail spin. John McCain's win in nine states really pushes him into the lead and maybe the GOP nomination. It is still very early to see what is going to happen, but I think tonight that we have a slightly clearer view of who each party will take to the nominations.

Coming Back To The Blog

Good Morning From Oregon. Well thats the best first line I could come up with this morning. I've had a request to update my blog and since nothing is happening at this moment, why not. Thanks to frequent reader D.B. for the suggestion.

So a lot of happened over the last two months. I took a job at KUPL FM in Portland and I think its the coolest job. I work with a ton of great people and radio is fun again. It has been a little weird going from the news/talk/sports to music radio, but I am adjusting well and it doesn't hurt its country music either. I'm doing promotions for the time beings and am hopeful to pick up a little production if it comes along. Staying in radio, Sports Business Radio and Bitsy Kelley Outdoors (my two shows) are moving right along. SBR is about to relaunch our website with some fresh new content and BKO is starting to get into the busy season with Bitsy traveling all over the place. It looks like BKO will start to tie in the televisions shows that Bitsy is now staring in.

On the weather front.....its been an interesting winter. To quote Jim Taylor, "its been the 500 foot winter!" The Portland metro area has had numerous bouts with snow and winter precip. Most of it has been falling at the 500 foot elevation mark and above and its only come down the valley floor a few times. We had a white Christmas this last year and it made for a great morning. Vancouver had a Tornado come thru and it did some awesome damage. NWS rated it an EF-1. Things have calmed down this week and it looks like we are about to get into a little bit warmer pattern which is good news. With all this snow in the foothills and low elevations, we would be worried about flooding, but it looks like the water storage places are still low. We need them to be filled for a non drought summer. On to the AMS, I'm still on the executive council and have been nominated for President. The current president has expressed an interest in running again. We'll see how it all turns out.

I've taken up the hobby of the stock market. No I'm not investing at the moment, but I find the whole thing very interesting. I want to start to invest in the near future, but current financial situation won't allow it right now.

I'm doing well, just have some things on my plate at the moment and looking forward to seeing how this year turns out. So far 2008 is out of the gate with a bang, and I hope it continues....

Portland Weather Watch Coming Soon

I apologize for the lack of blogging, haven't had much to write about lately.
